My
main influences start with my parents who were in to a wide range of
styles from early synth sounds of Jean Michel Jarre, to the soulful
motown sounds and roots of reggae. As a kid, I got most of my music
from my elder cousins; a strong Hip Hop/RNB influence. As their
taste progressed into early hardcore and jungle, so did mine.
It was
the early Metalheadz and Good Looking releases that got me hooked on
Drum and Bass. I enjoyed tuning into Kiss (and now Radio 1) to check
out the latest tracks on the Friday night Fabio and Grooverider shows.
At the moment I’m listening to anything from uplifting house, soul and
dub. Also, I’m quite lucky to have two flat mates (and Dom), each with
a diverse taste in music – I don’t discriminate if it sounds good!
It was
not long before I became interested in producing music. I didn’t
follow the orthodox route, starting with turntables. Instead, I
followed the advice of Mc Sense – buying a sampler and entering the
world of producing. He taught me the basic skills of DJing and has a
continuing influence on my productions.
Around
about the same time Diverse and Funkshun were getting heavily into the
music and had invested in a pair of 1210’s. As they perfected their
mixing skills, I was refining my own sound. Now, after a few years
I’m getting closer to the sound that I’m looking for. Now it’s just
time - University lifestyle (Big Up UCL!) and perusing a medical
degree leaves me with next to no time to produce tunes. Hopefully,
next year I will be able to dedicate a lot more time to music.
Nonetheless, I still have a long way to go; both technically and
musically... Its an exciting ride!
My
main focus at the moment is production. However, I would love to get
back into the Djing again, and explore other genres of music;
particularly house, hip hop and breakbeat. I’ve got a few
collaborations coming so thinkin about the future, its live!.
