| PHOTEK RECORDS LAUNCH PARTY - REVIEW | ||
|
Traffic @ Club Colosseum, Vauxhall - 14/9/02 Traffic is a night that I've been wanting to visit for a while. It is a Drum & Bass night from the Future Thinkin' organisation. The thesis behind the events is to give the punters a varied line up mixing in the big names with a few up and comings. This was my third trip to Club Colosseum in Vauxhall. I drove this time, free parking is available in a nearby Sainsbury's. There was a small queue outisde, taking 20 minutes to get in. I paid the £8 admission and entered the venue. Past the entrance at the top of the stairs is a bar area. There's plenty of sofas and it has speakers connected to the main room. Which means you can listen to the music at conversation level. In the main room residents DM Cut & Danny Exile were playing a back to back set. They were joined by MC System and a female vocalist which was a nice touch. They covered many different styles of Drum & Bass. I decided to check out the rest of the venue. There are 3 bars in the club, which have the usual club prices (i.e £2 for a bottle of water). Arena 2 was home to the Nu Skool Breakz room. I managed to catch the Drunken Allstars. They are a 3 man team who mixed it up on 5 decks with loads of wicked scratching. If you see their name on a flyer check 'em out. In the main room DJ Die was covering for an absent Roni Size and did a good job of it. He was accompanied by MC Moose who was on top form. Atfer half an hour I decided to check out Arena 2 again. The 2 old skool legends Ellis Dee & Swan E were mixing it up with a Nu Skool Breaks set with plenty of Old Skool samples. Back in the Main room Photek was doing his thing with MC Justiyc on the mic. This was Photek's first appearance of 2002, he did not dissapoint. This was the launch night of his label and he played a taste of what was to come. Up next was Goldie. I personally feel the criticism he recieves is unfair. People forget about the music he's made just because he became a celebrity. He certainly did'nt act like a superstar, he just turned up - no entourage and played. Including remixes of Unkut's 'Midnight' and Simon 'Bassline' Smith's 'Palamino', a wicked old skool track brought up to date. Best set of the night. For the last hour Doc Scott took over playing a mixed set from the darker tracks to the funkier sounds. All in all it was a top night with a good up for it crowd and friendly security. If you are into Drum & Bass miss it at your peril. Reviewed by Adam M |
